Cheese Sauce Recipe 1 teaspoon of butter 1 dessertspoon of flour 1 cup of milk for white sauce Melt the butter in a pan over a gentle heat. shake in the flour stirring hard. Off the heat is safest. It will make a rather dry looking mixture with the butter. Stir the milk in gradually over a low heat. If you see lumps appear then stir hard as it's easier to do this whilst the mixture is quite thick prior to adding in any more liquid. Keep on stirring so that it thickens and then allow the sauce to bubble for 10 minutes otherwise it will just taste of starch.
